Historical Facts

Louisville has come a long way since the first Pennsylvania settlers arrived here over 200 years ago.   The following will provide you with a brief outline of our cities past.

*  The first permanent settlement in the Louisville area came in 1778 when George Rogers Clark established a camp just above the Falls of the Ohio.

*  Louisville owes its existence to the Falls of the Ohio, which was the only place along the 981 mile Ohio River where water flowed over bedrock creating a series of rapids and waterfalls which made it almost impassible for travelers.

*  Louisville is named for King Louis XVI in appreciation of French aid during the Revolution.

* In 1850, Louisville was the nation's 10th largest city and the Louisville & Nashville Railroad or L&N was organized.

In 1874 the Louisville Jockey Club was formed.  The club later became what is now called Churchill Downs which is the home of the Kentucky Derby.

In 1874 Hillerich & Bradsby Company produced the first Louisville Slugger baseball bat.

* In 1916 the Ford Motor Company opened its first automobile assembly plant.  Today, Louisville is the Ford truck capital of the world.

* In 1922 WHAS, Louisville's first radio station,  went on the air.

* In 1937 torrential rain fell throughout the Ohio Valley, flooding more than three-fourths of the city.  The Great Flood of 1937 caused more than 250,000 people to be evacuated, 90 deaths  and $50 million in damage.  This later lead to the construction of a flood wall that is currently around the city.

*  During World War II, Louisville was selected as the site for three plants by Dupont, BF Goodrich and American and became the world's largest producer of synthetic rubber.

TARC also operates the Toonerville Trolley, a re-creation of a 19th-century trolley car (and named after a popular comic strip started in local newspapers at the turn of the century).  Each trolley is a detailed reproduction of streetcars made at the turn of the century, complete with  mahogany seats, other woodwork and gleaming brass hardware. If you’re lucky, you may even get to ring the solid brass bell!  All you have to do is just hop on and enjoy!  It provides shuttle service downtown.
